OpenAI API key

Configure the official OpenAI Provider and its Credential safely.

The official OpenAI Provider uses an API-key Credential. It is separate from the Codex subscription Provider.

import { openai } from "@mitome/providers/openai";

const provider = openai(); // reads OPENAI_API_KEY

Options let you change the environment variable, API URL, or Responses transport:

const provider = openai({
  apiKeyEnv: "MY_OPENAI_KEY",
  transport: "websocket", // default: WebSocket on Bun/Node, HTTP elsewhere
});

baseUrl defaults to https://api.openai.com/v1. Use openaiCompatible() rather than changing this option when the endpoint represents a distinct Provider identity.

Authenticate the CLI

mitome auth login

The CLI prompts for the environment variable named by apiKeyEnv. See CLI credentials for storage and precedence.

Prefer your deployment platform's secret manager for embedded or production use. Never put the key in index.ts, commit .env, include it in logs, or expose it to an Agent as Instructions or Tool output.

Model hints

The OpenAI Model catalog is generated from models.dev and cached for offline CLI initialization. See Providers and Models for catalog semantics. Repository maintainers refresh the generated fallback with bun run hints:refresh when updating releases.

See ADR-0028 for the catalog policy.
